Get Out of the House: Fun Activities Nearby
Are you planning a weekend gathering at The Black Diamond Lodge and want some fun things for your guests to do nearby? We’ve got a long list of fun things do to our beautiful location. Halfway between Durango and Silverton, we have hiking, biking, paddleboarding, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, off-roading, and more (if you can believe it)! We have complied a list of things for your guests to do with and without a car.
Things to do if you don’t have a car:
Now this list is much shorter, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less fun.
Head on over to The Nugget Bar and grab a drink with a gourmet slider. They typically have live music and a fun crowd.
Purgatory Ski Resort is just a little past The Nugget and they have plenty to do in the summer including mountain biking and hiking. You can also just ride the ski lift up and down if you don’t have a lot of energy after that slider and beer.
Twilight Lake is right across the street from the resort and they have everything to you need to go stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. They also have some beautiful hikes right around the lake area.
Things to do if you do have a car:
We personally LOVE Silverton and suggest you go there if you want a real mountain town experience. The town is only a couple of streets long but is packed with rich history, great restaurants, and stunning views. If you are feeling adventurous there are also countless off-roading trails that start near Silverton and a handful of Jeep and Razor rentals in town.
Head into Durango for a wonderful meal and a lovely stroll down the main street. Whether you want to buy some merch to remember your trip or do a bar crawl, Durango’s Main Street is the place to do it with tons of local shops and breweries there is something for everyone. Plus, downtown is where the train station is!
The Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is the historical landmark of this town! It is a beautiful train full of rich history with several different classes of seats available. They also have a very engaging museum if you don’t have time to take a ride on the train.
Go to Lake Nighthorse! Do you need something to cool off? Try our beautiful lake just 10 minutes out of town. You can rent paddleboards, swim, tan, or play on the blow-up obstacle course called the Wibbit! This is a great way to get the little ones to burn some energy.
If you’re looking for a little more relaxing water adventure look no farther than the Durango Hot Springs. This newly renovated spa has plenty of room for the kiddos and the adults with a wide range of temperatures in their pools. They also have live music, food trucks, and massage services.
During the winter, Bears Ranch (on your way from the lodge to Durango) hosts wonderful slay rides pulled by their sweet horses. During the summer, they do a variety of trail rides.
During the early spring the Animas River is bursting at the seams with wild fun. Take your family and hop on a raft for an afternoon of splashing through town. In the summer, the river is much calmer if you still want to go out but maybe aren’t up for the rougher waters.
